Wicked

After watching the broadway musical Wicked at the Ford Center in Chicago, I immediately bought this book and read it during my long haul flight home. It was a challenging book for a sleep deprived and exhausted mind to read. Overwhelming details, uncommon words and the descriptions were too lengthy for my liking. I was left with unanswered questions long after I finished reading. Still, I was captivated by the whole story plot.

In the children's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the story was centered on Dorothy Gale who killed the Wicked Witch of the West. That was the story that everyone was familiar with during their childhood.

In Gregory Maguire's Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the story is all about a green-skinned little girl named Elphaba who grew up to be the Wicked Witch of the West. She's more than just wicked. She was an outcast who was befriended by a popular girl in school, fell in love, fought for what she believed in and eventually became a witch.

A far cry from the original children's story,  allow this book to take you to an imaginary world where animals can talk and fight for equality.  A long story plot revolving around friendship, romance, adultery, politics, social classes, religion, magic, sorcery, intrigue, death and deception.

Praise Him Who Orchestrates

From an outsider's perspective, my professional life revolves around the highly coveted (by quack nutritionists and dietitian wannabes) practice of being a nutrition, health and wellness expert.  Made even more exciting by the myriad of interesting people I get to meet in my office, my client's corporate offices, as well as, the lectures and media launches and appearances I engage in. A career that is not only financially rewarding but delicate and dynamically impacting the lives of people in many ways.  Little do people know about my life as an online English teacher which commenced in 2013 and concluded in 2018. A humbling experience that has taught me so much about the Japanese culture and how it is to truly work for something that does not entail much monetary compensation. Half an hour or two, sometimes more hours, several days in a month was all it took to give me that sense of pride in witnessing my students, who could barely speak a word of English during our first les...

Reflections of a 40-year old Rehabilitated Shopaholic

I am 10 lbs heavier and happier. I am healthier in mind and body because  I have learned how to let go of relationships that don’t respect and reflect my values,  say no to activities that don’t align with my purpose, choose my battles wisely,  and be content to rely on God’s grace each day.  Grace to accept that God’s thoughts are higher  than my thoughts,  grace to forgive, grace to do what I have to do even if  I don’t want to  get out of my comfort zone.  Grace to eat better, slee p soundly and be physically active.  More importantly, I have learned to be happy with my appearance,  to be content with my lot in life, not seeking anyone’s approval  and couldn’t care less about popularity, what I wear, how I look or  even what accolades I have in order to impress anyone  because I have reached that point in my life  where I no longer have to seek  anyone’s approval to affirm that I am loved, wante...

Confessions of a single woman' s heart (CLOY Edition)

While almost everyone else was binge watching K-drama over the lockdown, I was too busy working long hours, from 6am to 12 midnight. I didn't realize that I have allowed people to overstep the boundaries of my time. I would get frantic calls from anxious patients, caregivers and whoever needs me at an ungodly hour. I would do my best to help them calm down while I was crying inside my heart.  I was emotionally, mentally and physically burned out after 8 long months. I began to resent the internet (online meetings and webinars were too much!) yet oh so grateful for it because it kept me connected to the people I love and it enabled me to work while many have unfortunately lost their jobs. It was on my birthday weekend in November 2020 that I finally had precious time to spare after months of striking a balance between taking care of my patients, remotely working for my family's businesses, ministry, coping as much as I could (because I terribly missed my family) and keeping my s...
